Synopsis

It's the first day of the 1980 school year at Sullivan County Community College, and 19-year-old Bobby Shafran is shocked to find he is already the big man on campus. Problem is, this is Bobby's freshman year and everybody is calling him "Eddy." Bobby soon learns the truth: He is the spitting image of somebody named Eddy Galland, and one two-hour drive to Long Island brings him face-to-face with the fraternal twin brother he never knew. After The New York Post jumps on the story, they soon get a call from David Kellman, and it turns out the twins are actually triplets, all born on July 12, 1961, all adopted, and all having no clue of each other's existence. Together again after 19 years, the triplets become international celebrities, hitting the talk show circuit and having everybody marvel at how similar they are, down to their mannerisms, their high school sports careers, and their taste in food, cigarettes, and women. But underneath this stunning reunion lies an extraordinary and disturbing secret that goes beyond their own lives, and as they and their adoptive families dig deeper into the truth, they learn that their separation was no coincidence. Equal parts enthralling and upsetting, Three Identical Strangers goes beyond the tabloid fodder and delivers a beautifully sad rumination on nature versus nurture.
