A note on the festival and the COVID-19 situation

For 22 years, Jio MAMI’s mission has been to galvanise the industry, curate the best Indian and international cinema and bring them to the widest possible audience. That remains unchanged. However, the ecosystem has significantly altered due to COVID-19 for everyone including filmmakers, our audience, our partners and sponsors. The festival has adapted to this changed and changing reality and also put into motion changes that felt necessary and urgent after deep reflection that this period of hiatus brought about. We have reshaped the structure, awards, sections and nature of the festival keeping in mind our various stakeholders, the challenges that the pandemic has raised (especially in India) and the natural course of evolution for any institution.


  • Please read the rules and regulations carefully before filling the entry/submission form.

  • Only the rights holder is eligible to fill the form. You are solely responsible for the authenticity of the information provided by you. In case of ANY discrepancies found in the information provided by you, your entry will be disqualified.

  • An applicant submitting a film to the festival must confirm that he/she has the requisite authority or has obtained the requisite authority from the rights holder to submit this film in the Jio MAMI 22nd Mumbai Film Festival and make available the film for screening.

  • The applicant will be the main point of contact for all future communications regarding this entry into the festival.

DESCRIPTION

Spotlight is a section that focuses attention on upcoming as well as established talent and distinct directorial voices from across the country and diverse film cultures. Films selected in this section are eligible for the Best Female Filmmaker Award.

ELIGIBILITY
  • This section is open to only feature-length films (fiction and documentaries). The minimum duration of a feature-length film (fiction or documentary) should be 50 minutes or more.

  • The films must have been completed after 1st December 2020.

  • The director(s) must be Indian citizen(s)/Overseas Citizen of India (OCI)/Person of Indian Origin (PIO) AND at least one of the producers must be an Indian citizen.

  • Films that are works-in-progress are accepted on the condition that the submitted version will be the only one watched by the selection committee. Once submitted as a work-in-progress, the film is ineligible to apply for future editions of the festival, in any other form. If selected, a final version of the film in the specified formats (DCP as well digital screening file) must be available to the festival one month before the festival i.e. 11th February 2022.

  • To be eligible for the festival, the submitted films must have an India Premiere status at the time of their screening at the festival.

  • All films that will be screened at the festival will be screened in their original language with English subtitles. Films whose original language is English, will also require English subtitles. The cost of subtitling is the sole responsibility of the producer.

  • Dubbed versions of films from other languages are not eligible for submission. For films in non-English languages, the online screener must have English subtitles. In case an online screener of a film is submitted without subtitles, it will be ineligible for selection.

  • Films submitted in any form to earlier editions of the festival are ineligible to apply. A film that has been withdrawn from participation in earlier editions cannot be re-submitted to the festival.

  • Participation at other international festivals outside India and/or applying in the 68th National and State Film Awards (2021) does not ensure entry into this section.

  • The festival will not provide feedback on films or specific reasons for selection or rejection of any film.

  • Only the filmmakers who make it to the official selection of the festival will be notified about selection at the end of the selection process and no information will be divulged before that.

  • The Festival Director reserves the right to settle all cases not covered by the guidelines and to grant exceptions in special cases. All cases will be governed by and construed in all respects in accordance with the laws of India and settled under the exclusive jurisdiction of the courts of Mumbai. The festival director also reserves the right to remove any film from the selection in any special cases as deemed by the festival.

  • Films that submit to the Spotlight section can use the same form to also apply to the India Gold section. In case your film is eligible to apply to multiple sections, please tick the applicable checkboxes in the form in order to be considered for those sections. If submitted in more than one section the selection committee will reserve the right to choose the most appropriate section for the film, if it is selected.

  • Films submitted to the above sections can also be selected by the festival for curated sections that are not open for entries. If selected, the selection committee reserves the right to choose the most appropriate section for the film. This decision of the festival will be communicated to the filmmaker and if the filmmaker accepts the decision then the film will screen in the section selected for the film by the festival.

  • If selected, the representatives of the selected film must keep this information confidential (including on social media) till an official announcement by the Jio MAMI 22nd Mumbai Film Festival, where the final list of selected films will be announced. Breach of this will make the selection of the film liable to be cancelled.

  • Many of the films from our official selection feature child actors in some capacity or the other. But Jio MAMI Mumbai Film Festival is a festival only for people who are of the age 18 and above. Therefore, anyone under the age of 18 cannot attend any of our screenings, regardless of how instrumental they were to the film. The festival maintains the strictest of policies on those under the age of 18 attending screenings, regardless of whether they are talent, delegates or affiliated to the film team.

PREMIERE STATUS
  • To be eligible for the festival, the submitted films must have an India Premiere status at the time of their screening at the festival.

  • In terms of selection, preference will be given to:

    • World Premiere means that the film has never been screened anywhere publicly.

    • International Premiere means that the film has only been screened publicly in its country of origin.

    • Asia Premiere means that the film has only been screened publicly outside of Asia.

    • India Premiere means that the film should not have been screened in India either theatrically or digitally (commercially or in film festivals), had a public screening in India, film club / private club screening, screenings at educational institutions or released on video / DVD / telecast / internet / VOD / streaming platform. The films should not be available on any public platform. Private previews are exempt.

  • In the case that the film has screened digitally prior to Jio MAMI 22nd Mumbai Film Festival and was available to Indian audiences, it won’t be eligible for this edition of the festival.

  • A public screening is when the film is screened for the general public. This could be a paid or a free screening, but if it is listed on any print literature or internet announcing the film with a date, time, venue and open to the general or specific public to attend, it will be counted as a public screening.

  • A private preview refers to screenings that are held only for cast and crew, producers, and/or distributors.

CENSOR EXEMPTION AND CERTIFICATE
  • Films applying to the festival do not require a certification from the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC).

  • In case a film already has a certification, only the certified version will be considered for screening.

  • For films not having certification, the screening will be subject to an exemption from the Ministry of I&B, Govt. of India for which the festival will apply on behalf of the selected films.

  • For films that apply or receive a censor certificate during the selection process, regardless of the submitted version, only the certified version will be screened. If selected, the status of the censor certificate has to be communicated to the festival team one month before the festival i.e. February 2022 without any change in the same until the festival has concluded.

  • All screenings are subject to censor exemption. In case a film does not receive a censor exemption, it will not be screened.

MEDIA ACCEPTED FOR SELECTION
  • The festival only accepts non-downloadable and password-protected online screeners. Please submit the same as part of your form submission. We do not accept any submission via any other methods.

  • The festival does not accept film screener links where the film can be downloaded. (For example Google Drive)

  • The password-protected film screener link must be active at least till 15th January 2022.

  • In case the online film screener shared is not password protected, the festival cannot be held responsible for the security of the film screener.

  • Please do not send links where an email login is required to access the film screener. (For example Withoutabox, Cinando)

  • Please note that we will not accept multiple links for one submission. Once a film screener has been shared, the festival will not accept further updated screeners of the film.

  • No requests for private screenings to selection committee members will be entertained. All films have to submit directly to the Jio MAMI 22nd Mumbai Film Festival only through the above-mentioned methods.

  • All films have to be submitted in their original version with English subtitles. In case the original language of the film is English, then English subtitles are still required. The cost of subtitling is the sole responsibility of the producer.

  • Dubbed versions of films from other languages are not eligible for submission. For films in non-English languages, the online screener must have English subtitles. In case an online screener of a film is submitted without subtitles, it will be ineligible for selection.

DEADLINE
  • A submission is considered complete when ALL (3) the following criteria are met. Only on the acknowledgement of receipt of all three is the submission considered complete.

    • A correctly filled online submission form

    • The film screener reaches the festival team

    • The realisation of payment of submission fees.

  • The deadline for completed entry forms, payment of submission fees, and submission of the online film screener to the festival must be strictly observed. The last date of completing submission is 10th December 2021. This deadline will not be extended.

  • The festival accepts work-in-progress submissions subject to the following conditions:

    • The first copy submitted will be the ONLY copy considered by the selection committee and the programmers for the festival.

    • A DCP and digital screening file of the FINAL VERSION of the film must reach the festival team 30 days before the start date of the festival in case your film is selected.

    • If the final version of the film fails to reach on time, the film will be disqualified and will not be eligible for future editions of the festival as well.

SUBMISSION FEE
  • A submission fee is applicable to all entries to the festival. Payment can be made online or through a cheque or via bank transfer after the form has been completed. Details of this are at the end of the entry form once you reach the payment gateway. According to your choice of mode of payment, all details will appear on the screen.

  • This fee is non-refundable and does not include the transaction charges of the payment gateway.

  • Any request for a discount or waiver cannot be granted.

  • The fee structure is given below: These rates are subject to Indian tax laws and global exchange rates. All figures rounded off to the nearest decimal.
    17th August 2021 to 30th September – INR 5,000 (approx. USD 67)
    1st October 2021 to 21st November 2021 – INR 7,000 (approx. USD 93)
    22nd November 2021 to 10th December 2021 – INR 10,000 (approx. USD 134)

DOCUMENTATION AND FESTIVAL CATALOGUE

The festival documents each film that is submitted extensively and therefore it is very important that detailed information on each film is submitted.

This is what is required to be submitted:

  • Film Details - English Title, Original Title, Original Language, Duration of the film (minutes), Shooting Format, B&W or Colour, Year of Production, Production Country(ies), Name of the Director, and Nationality of the Director

  • Film Details - English Title, Original Title, Original Language, Duration of the film (minutes), Shooting Format, Screening Format, B&W or Colour, Year of Production, Production Country(ies), Name of the Director, and Nationality of the Director

  • Production Company Detail – Name of Production Company/Producer, International Sales (if applicable), Indian Distributor, Festivals and Awards

  • Details of the Director – Director’s Note on the film (under 300 words), Short Synopsis (under 150 words), Long Synopsis (under 300 words), Director’s Biography (200-300 words), and Director’s Filmography (200-300 words)

  • 3 High-Resolution Stills (minimum 300 dpi) of the film

  • 1 High-Resolution Still (minimum 300 dpi) of the director

  • 1 High-Resolution Still (minimum 300 dpi) of the poster

  • Proof of citizenship/OCI/PIO of the director and producer.

The form for this information is a part of the submission form and filling it is mandatory. The festival reserves the right to select any still from those that are submitted.

AWARDS

The films screening in the Spotlight section are eligible for the following awards:

  • Best Female Filmmaker: Films screening in the India Gold and Spotlight sections are eligible for this award. It includes a trophy plus a cash prize of INR 5,00,000*. The cash prize is to be equally shared by the director(s).

*All the cash prizes are subject to Indian tax laws and global exchange rates. All figures rounded off to the nearest decimal.

FORMAT AND STORAGE OF FILM
  • Selected films will be required to submit for both physical and digital screenings as specified by the festival upon invitation.

  • For physical screenings, only DCP format is accepted.

  • For digital screenings, the festival team will share the technical details with the selected films.

  • The festival may require additional screening formats depending on the specifications of the screening. This will be communicated to the film team upon selection.

  • Once a DCP and/or digital screening file has been submitted, it cannot be changed for another unless the festival team asks for a new file or an error is discovered during tech-check.

  • The festival will not do any physical screenings of films with watermarks. Digital screenings may include forensic and physical watermarking.

  • If selected, the festival will bear the costs for the storage and insurance of the DCP for the period during which the film is with the festival.

  • With respect to selected films, once a DCP has been submitted, it cannot be changed for another unless the festival team asks for a new file or an error is discovered during tech-check.

  • In the event the DCP is damaged or gets lost during the festival, the festival’s liability is limited to the costs of replacement of ONLY the damaged component on which the DCP is stored (USB and/or external hard drive).

  • In the event of any apparent damage to the DCP after it has been sent back from the festival office, the corresponding damage report and/or compensation claim must be received by the festival within 14 days after receipt of the media.

  • If any damages are incurred on a DCP of a film, no claims will be entertained (even within the 14-day window after receipt of the media) if the DCP has been used in the interim between the return of the print by the festival and the date of claim.

OFFICIAL LAUREL AND PUBLICITY

The official Festival laurel with either “Spotlight” or “Official Selection” should be displayed in all advertising and promotional material of all the films selected for screening in the festival. These should also be clearly visible for theatrical release as well as for Video/DVD/Digital distribution in India and abroad. All selected films will receive a digital laurel of the festival. Award-winning films will receive the appropriate laurel with the name of the award.

DECLARATION
  • The applicant agrees to have read and accepted the rules & regulations for participation in the Jio MAMI 22nd Mumbai Film Festival.

  • By submitting a Film to Jio MAMI 22nd Mumbai Film Festival (the "festival") for festival consideration, the submitter (the “Applicant”) represents that he or she has obtained consent from any and all owners, creators, writers, producers, and/or other authorized representatives of the Film whose consent is required to submit the Film to Jio MAMI 22nd Mumbai Film Festival and screen the film at the festival, and has read, understood and agreed to the rules and regulations.

  • It is the sole responsibility of the Applicant to clear all the content of the film from any and all actual or potential legal claims and issues, including, without limitation, claims based upon theories of libel, defamation, invasion of privacy, violation of rights of publicity, theft of trade secrets, breach of confidence, breach of confidential relationship, and breach of express or implied contract (“Third Party Claim(s)”). The festival expressly disavows any responsibility for, and will not be held responsible for, any unauthorized inclusion of any content or materials within or relating to the submitted Film that are or may be the basis for any Third Party Claims based upon any of the foregoing legal theories or others. Jio MAMI 22nd Mumbai Film Festival reserves the right to disqualify, without refund of any or all submission fees previously collected from the Applicant, any Film that is or may become the subject of any Third Party Claims. In the event that any Third Party Claim(s) shall be asserted by any person or entity, Applicant shall fully indemnify and defend the festival, and each of their representatives and affiliates from any liability in connection therewith and from any and all fees and expenses, including but not limited to attorneys’ fees, that each of any of them may incur in connection therewith.

  • The Applicant will be the main point of contact for all future communications regarding this entry into the festival.
