RULES AND REGULATIONS FOR JIO MAMI WITH STAR-HARPERCOLLINS IMPRINT

  • Please read these rules and regulations (hereinafter referred to as “Rules and Regulations”) carefully before applying to the MAMI HarperCollins Book Imprint (hereinafter referred to as “MAMI-HCI Book Imprint”).

  • Only the rights holder/ author is eligible to submit a proposal before the MAMI-HCI Book Imprint (hereinafter referred to as “Proposal”).

  • The author is solely responsible for the authenticity of the information provided by them in the Proposal.

  • In case of any discrepancies found in the information provided in the Proposal by the author, then the said Proposal will be disqualified.

  • By submitting a Proposal, the author agrees to abide by these Rules and Regulations.

1 - Description

    Mumbai Academy of Moving Image (hereinafter referred to as “MAMI”) is committed to promoting and furthering the cause of the written word. India has a vibrant film industry but sadly, it is greatly under-represented by literature. The MAMI-HCI Book Imprint will invite, select and commission original books on the subject of cinema.

2 - General Criteria
  • Proposals must be a book-length study on any aspect of Indian cinema.

  • The submitted Proposal must be between 1,000-1,500 words long and must include a synopsis of the proposed book. Proposals that do not adhere to the word limit as mentioned in this clause will be disqualified without any intimation.

  • Submitted Proposal must be for a proposed book that, once completed, is of a minimum length of 40,000 words and a maximum length of 90,000 words (hereinafter referred to as “Proposed Book”).

  • The Proposed Book must be a single non-fiction narrative discussion.

  • Academic treatises, collections of columns or short articles, collections of interviews, screenplays/scripts, biographies and photo essays are not eligible.

  • The author of the proposed Book must be over the age of 21 and an Indian citizen.

  • The Proposed Book must be newly authored specifically for publication by the MAMI-HCI Book Imprint; not more than 10% of the Proposed Book may be previously published through any medium, mode, print or otherwise. In case more than 10% of the manuscript of the Proposed Book has been previously published, the Proposal will be disqualified.

  • Obtaining all requisite permissions and making payments for any illustrations, graphs, maps and quoted material used in the synopsis of the Proposed Book and to be used in the Proposed Book shall be the author’s responsibility.

  • The copyright including moral rights in the Proposed Book will vest with the author(s) but all other rights will be held by the MAMI-HCI Book Imprint.

  • The MAMI-HCI Book Imprint will have the exclusive right to publish the Proposed Book worldwide in all languages through any medium, mode, print or otherwise.

  • Any instance of plagiarism will result in strict action and immediate disqualification.

  • Only the author’s whose Proposals are shortlisted will be notified about selection at the end of the selection process and no information will be divulged before that

  • The festival director and authorised representative of the MAMI and HarperCollins India (hereinafter referred to as “HCI”) reserve the sole right to settle all cases not covered by the Rules and Regulations and to grant exceptions in special cases. All cases will be governed by and construed in all respects in accordance with the laws of India and settled under the exclusive jurisdiction of courts of Mumbai.

  • Once a Proposal is submitted to MAMI-HCI Book Imprint for consideration, no further modifications shall be accepted.

  • In the event, more than one Proposal is filed by the same author for the same proposed book, then such additional Proposal will be disqualified by MAMI-HCI Book Imprint.

  • MAMI and HCI reserve the right to amend the Rules and Regulations of the MAMI-HCI Book Imprint from time to time.

  • MAMI-HCI reserves the right at any time to modify or discontinue, temporarily or permanently, the acceptance of the Proposals (and any of its terms) with or without prior notice for any reason.

  • These Rules and Regulations are subject to change or updating, at any time without prior notice. The changes may include superseding terms and conditions or specific notices. YOU SHOULD REVIEW THESE RULES AND REGULATIONS FROM TIME TO TIME TO BE AWARE OF ANY CHANGES THAT ARE MADE.

  • By submitting a Proposal, the author agrees to abide by these Rules and Regulations.

  • Entry to the MAMI-HCI Book Imprint is void where prohibited by the laws of the author’s country of residence.

  • These Rules and Regulations are governed by the laws of India and the author agree to submit to the exclusive jurisdiction of the courts in Mumbai.

3 - Selection Process
  • A jury comprising of experts in the field of cinema and literature will evaluate all eligible Proposals.

  • The decision of MAMI on the eligibility of the Proposal or otherwise shall be final and binding.

  • A shortlist of ten Proposals will be announced at the MAMI Word to Screen market in August/September 2019.

  • The authors of the shortlisted Proposal must then submit a chapter (5,000-8,000 words) of the Proposed Book by 1st October 2019, which will be used as the basis to select one winner of the MAMI-HCI Book Imprint grant.

  • Shortlisted authors must confirm their intent and ability to complete the proposed Book by 1st May 2020, if they are awarded the grant.

  • MAMI/HCI reserves the right to dismiss or refuse any Proposal without any liability; i) that contains any material which is or reasonably likely to be defamatory, obscene, offensive, contrary to standards of decency, or ii) which MAMI/HCI has reasonable grounds to believe infringes the intellectual property rights (including moral rights) of any third party.

4 - Language
  • Acceptable language for submission is English.

5 - MAMI-HCI Book Imprint Grant
  • The MAMI-HCI Book Imprint will award a grant of INR 2,00,000 (Indian Rupees Two Lakhs only) to the author of the proposed Book Proposal that is adjudged to be the winner by the jury. All grants are inclusive of applicable taxes.

  • The winning author will receive a publishing contract from HCI, with regular author royalties and an advance against royalties.

  • The author will be contractually bound to deliver a full and final manuscript to HCI by 1st May 2020.

  • In the event that the final manuscript of the proposed Book submitted by the author of the Proposal that is awarded the grant, is assessed as not being at par with the standards of MAMI and HCI, then MAMI-HCI Book Imprint reserves the right to not publish the proposed Book.

6 - Submission Procedure
  • Please e-mail a proposal for the prospective book along with a synopsis with your name, address and mobile number to: mamihci-imprint@mumbaifilmfest.com

  • Please note that the total length of the proposal and synopsis together has to be 1,000-1,500 words in order for it to be eligible in the MAMI-HCI Book Imprint.

  • All submissions should be in .doc or .pdf format. In case of the submissions being submitted in any other format apart from the ones mentioned above, such submissions, shall be liable to be rejected/disqualified by MAMI-HCI Book Imprint without any intimation.

7 - Deadlines
  • The Proposal needs to be submitted via e-mail by 1st September 2019.

  • Shortlisted authors need to submit a chapter of the proposed Book by 1st October 2019.

8 - Documentation and Festival Catalogue
  • The Jio MAMI 21st Mumbai Film Festival with Star (“Festival”) extensively documents each Proposal that is submitted at MAMI-HCI Book Imprint. The author grants the right to MAMI for publishing their Proposal submitted under MAMI-HCI Book Imprint at the Festival. The Festival reserves the right to use this information for the purposes of publicity, use in Festival catalogue and information dissemination.

9 - Official Festival Logo and Publicity
  • The winning Proposal will receive a digital logo of the Festival and laurel which shall be used for further publicity.





Declaration







  • I am the author of the Proposed Book and I have full power and authority to submit the Proposal.

  • The content of the Proposed Book does not and shall not infringe any existing copyright or licence of any third party.

  • The content contains nothing libellous, obscene or otherwise unlawful, and that it does not breach any confidence or invade the privacy of any person.

  • I have not offered more that 10% of the manuscript of the Proposed Book content to another publisher and have not entered into any publishing contract for the same prior to selection of the Proposal.

  • I agree and grant to the MAMI-HCI Book Imprint the sole and exclusive right to produce, translate, publish, sell and distribute the Proposed Book and/or to license the production, translation, publication, sale and distribution of the Proposed Book in all languages in all media, forms and formats whether now known or hereinafter invented (including without limitation in print, audio and electronic form) and in the other subsidiary rights throughout the world for the full term of copyright including any extensions, renewals or revivals thereof.

  • I acknowledge and agree that it is my sole responsibility to clear all the content of the book and submitted Proposal from any and all actual or potential legal claims and issues, including, without limitation, claims based upon theories of libel, defamation, invasion of privacy, violation of rights of publicity, theft of trade secrets, breach of confidence, breach of confidential relationship, and breach of express or implied contract (hereinafter referred to as “Third Party Claim(s)”). The MAMI, HCI and the organizers and sponsors of the Festival expressly disavows any responsibility for, and will not be held responsible for, any unauthorized inclusion of any content or materials within or relating to the Proposal that are or may be the basis for any Third Party Claims based upon any of the foregoing legal theories or others. I agree that MAMI, HCI and the organizers and sponsors of the Festival reserves the right to disqualify any submission that is or may become the subject of any Third Party Claims. In the event that any Third Party Claim(s) shall be asserted by any person or entity, I shall fully indemnify and defend the MAMI, HCI and the organizers and sponsors of the Festival, and each of their representatives and affiliates from any losses, damages, interest costs or expenses, claims incurred by them as a result of any breach or alleged breach or liability in connection therewith and from any and all fees and expenses, including but not limited to attorneys’ fees, that each of any of them may incur in connection therewith.

  • The decision of MAMI on the eligibility of the Proposal or otherwise shall be final and binding.
