Deliveryman Jongsu is out on a job when he runs into Haemi, a girl who once lived in his neighborhood. She asks him if he’d mind looking after her cat while she’s away on a trip to Africa. Lee Chang-dong made his debut with Green Fish (1997), a Korean noir that was an exploration of genre conventions and the real world. In his next, Peppermint Candy, he experimented with a narrative using flashbacks and followed it up with Oasis (2002), where he questioned the nature of true communication between people. It was with these two films that he received critical acclaim, popular success, and international accolades.
